Why does my tongue piercing hurt after changing it?

I got my tongue pierced two months ago and I have recently started changing it. My jewlery is good quality and bought from a reputable jewler, pure surgical steel. The piercing healed wonderfully and it felt fine when I changed my tongue ring the first time. This morning I cleaned it and then changed the barbell and now it's really irritated, a tiny bit swollen but just uncomfortable. What could be causing this?

Your tongue never stops healing. I got my tongue pierced 2 years ago and I still have that problem. The best thing you can to is keep in your piercing for as long as possible and try to change the piercing less frequently

Sometimes the body just doesn’t like foreign objects in it. I got my labret done when I was 19 and only changed the piercing itself maybe 10 times in the 10 years I had it. Each time, it would swell up and be a bit irritated for a couple days before it would settle down. Mind you, that was a number of different types of metal (gold, nickel-free, etc…) and it would still get messed up. Just rinse your mouth with warm salt water and keep it clean. You should be fine. If not, take it out. Good luck!
